How Do I Start Making Fashion Illustrations/Drawings?
A fashion figure’s body proportions are not the same as those of a real person. It often has an elongated head, which gives it more height. This “nine heads” measurement is typical in the industry, and it implies that these figures have a height of nine times their head size.
Here’s a step-by-step tutorial for making fashion sketches:
1.Draw a vertical line along the centre of the sheet of paper:
This line will represent the fashion figure’s centre of balance, extending from the head to the feet.
2. Divide the sheet into nine equal halves:
The fashion figure’s head, breast, waist, hips, thigh, calves, ankles, and feet will get divided into nine segments. To split the nine pieces, draw horizontal lines about an inch and an eighth apart.
3. Make a drawing of the pelvic region:
Draw a square in the centre of the balancing line for the fashion figure’s pelvis. This may be tilted in multiple directions to create different positions.
4. Draw the body and shoulders:
To draw the body, draw two lines upward from the edge of the pelvic square. The waist is formed by the lines curving inward and outward. Although the shoulders should be around the same breadth as the pelvis, the shoulder lines might be slanted to create a rounded front position.
5. Sketch the forehead and neck:
The length of the neck must be one-third of the width of the shoulders and half the length of the forehead. Form a circle proportional to the body for the forehead.
6. Design the legs:
The legs should be roughly four times the length of the sketched head. The legs are divided into two segments: thighs and calves. The thighs should be the same length as the head; reduce the line to the knee and to the ankle, such that ankles are about 1/4 the size of your sketched head.
7. Compose the arms by drawing reducing lines from the elbow to the wrist:
The hands can be situated on the hips or beside the torso.
8. Compose the feet:
The feet should be around the same length as the head.
9. Use the fashion figure you have constructed to develop your design ideas.
10. Illustrate the design:
Use shading to highlight where the material collects on a garment. Fill in the fashion design with colour to give it dimension. To finish the appearance, add face features or a hairdo.
What is the Job of a Fashion Illustrator?
A fashion illustrator draws sketches and paintings to communicate a garments appearance, style and cut. They are usually commissioned by magazines or other media outlets to create illustrations that appear in print. Another aspect of the job is working closely with designers, who employ them to draw their clothing on mannequins for marketing purposes.
